The Cherubs of Sale in line for national Healthy Nursery of the Year award

By Barbara Metcalfe at

A nursery in Sale is in the running for a national award for the food it cooks and serves and it’s healthy timetable.

The shortlisted nursery will find out if they have won ‘Healthy Nursery of the Year’ at the National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) Awards. They have been shortlisted with five  other nurseries from all over the UK, including Glasgow, Birmingham and Penrith.

Former children’s TV Presenter, and dad to Zoe,  Johnny Ball will be announcing the winners at the awards ceremony at the Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester on Friday  June 30th.

Over 80 parents wrote glowing testimonies to help Cherubs become one of six finalists for the award.

One parent, Ruth Kyndt said:“Cherubs deserve to win the award because the food they provide is great. It is freshly prepared on site and provides a varied and healthy diet. Recently they provided parents with a bag of ingredients for a delicious soup to make at home with their children, which I thought was a great idea.”

The nursery has an acre of garden for children to play and exercise in and serves homemade food from a seasonal menu, which was awarded the Bronze Catering Mark  from the Soil Association.

Manager Samantha Malan said:“We have our fingers crossed that we will be named Healthy Nursery of the Year, but even if we don’t we’re absolutely thrilled that so many of our parents think we deserve to win. We’d like to say a big thank you to every single one of them for taking the time to vote for Cherubs.

They had to submit a written statement to the NDNA detailing their healthy eating policy, the physical activities they do, the outdoor activities they provide and how they promote healthy living both at the nursery and at home.

Parents could vote and write recommendations and staff  also had to undergo an interview from the national organisation.
