Sale’s Water Taxis are heading to the canal on a slow boat from China

The Manchester Water Taxis otherwise known as Waxis will soon be in the North West of England where they will have their final fittings and fixtures added before making their maiden voyage on the Bridgewater Canal.

Sale Today can now reveal that the yellow Waxis will run from Sale to Castlefield as a commuter service twice a day from October of this year.

Two boats have been built in Shanghai and are currently on a container ship from China. The vessel is expected to dock in Felixstowe by early September and transported to Liverpool for fitting and safety checks.

Boat Build update – They’re finished! ūüôā they’re currently undergoing a pre shipment inspection. Once they’ve cleared this they start the long journey from Shanghai to Felixstowe due to land in the UK Friday 9th September. Yippee!

Steven Cadwell of Waxis Manchester says:”The dream is taking a huge step into reality. The boats were built in Shanghai – now they are on the way here in a special shipping container. ¬†If ¬†everything goes to plan they will arrive on September 9, to be fitted out in a Liverpool boatyard, before we collect them. We hope to have the boats operating from the end of October.”

“We are planning two commuter journeys at 7.30am and 8am rom Sale to Manchester, ¬†but this could change depending on demand. I would love to hear ¬†back from people in Sale – is it the right time for them – should it be later or earlier? ¬†Bearing in mind the average journey time will take around 45 minutes.”

Steve has posted a video which shows how the seating is laid out on the Waxis, including executive seating in one craft and commuter style seating in the other.

It’s anticipated that the Waxi service will pick up at the Sale Waterside Arts Centre and the Bridge Inn on Dane Road, before travelling to Manchester.

Steve wants to hear your views about the proposed timings. What time would YOU prefer the Waxis to run if you were commuting to the city each day on one of the boats.  Please leave a comment below or on our Facebook page.
